Internet....a boon or a bane of our Lives?!

Internet is encroaching on our lives so much that ..........it's pretty scary when you actually think about it.

Growing up, our lives were filled with real friends, reading books, playing games with real friends in real time and loads of other activities...like stamp or coin collecting, etc.

Today, how many kids do we find indulging in such activities? For the majority, the only books they ever opened or will open are their school books........but talk about any PC, Laptop, TCP/IP network protocols, chats, downloads.......and they would be quite knowledgeable and up to date. Yes, they have loads of friends...quite a few of them would have more than 100!...but it would be all on the internet world. Open Facebook and you will know what I am talking. Barely do I see them writing anything of their own........its the various applications which they have got which is doing all the communication & they are quite proficient in the various computer games!

I too am spending quite a bit of my time on the internet world........reading, writing, making contacts/friends, searching......So, is Internet a boon or a bane of our lives? I guess an excess of anything is always bad. I am glad that at least my formative years were spared of this technology! Seriously, I mean it!

that we all connect is reason enough to love the net....it is just a different world for kids...i know they wont trade this to have been in our past :)

strange really!!!

because just today had a conversation with 'someone' about something like this.

internet - damn, now i feel really old. better not answer that question. seriously though, it swings both ways.

use, abuse....whatever!!

agree with shoon, im happy to have grown up without cable tv, satellite tv, xbox, PS, gameboy, the internet.... all we had was books, vhs, atari, those little hand games, comic books. i wouldnt trade that for anything the kids have today.

i think you are absolutely correct in thinking that the internet--& technology generall--can be both a good and a bad thing...and that perspective (& in the case of children, sensible parents!) makes all the difference!

i do agree with you in being glad to be my age (early 40's) and having got all the way thru school (including college) without a computer...only b/c i cannot imagine anyone who's ALWAYS had one can appreciate it as much as i do! you really have to have hand-TYPED term papers...and gone to the library to look stuff up...and just basically done it all THE HARD WAY to be as excited as i am each time i sit down to write--and edit--in a wp program! ...plus i adore the internet...as well you know! :)

but yeah, if it was used IN PLACE OF "real" experiences for kids, that would be bad. of course i believe OUR parents said that about tv...and their parents said it about radio...and THEIR parents said the automobile would ruin everyone's health...there's always been scary new stuff & fear of change, i expect! it's lucky WE are so level-headed and turned out so well!!! :)
